Lake Tahoe Winter Driving

Weather can be unpredictable and change drastically in a short amount of time during winter months in Tahoe. Check the weather before preparing for an outing, planning around a big storm will allow for better road conditions and permit safe passage. Air pressure, antifreeze levels, and battery power should all be checked prior to venturing out. Drive slowly and avoid hard breaking to prevent fish tailing on slick spots. Be sure to use lower gears to slow your vehicle especially on downgrades, this will decrease the risk of sliding. Snow chains are a must; fitted to your tires they will maximize traction when driving in snowy and icy conditions. If driving is too much to undertake there are several options depending on time and budget. Amtrak’s California Zephyr runs daily between Emeryville and Truckee, the Bay Area Ski Bus offers trips to seven Tahoe resorts including Sugar Bowl, Squaw Valley, Heavenly, Northstar, Kirkwood and Sierra at Tahoe.
